“Suit the action to the word, the word to the action”

(Hamlet, III.ii)
Directions: Read T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” out loud in your group (the poem appears in the left frame; the annotations are to the right). Consider the following issues, discuss with fellow group members, and record your answers in your notebook.
  • Examine the repeated line “Do I dare?” and apply it to the larger context of the poem. Why is this such a conundrum for the speaker?
  • Discuss the speaker’s opinion of himself. How does his self-view figure into his course of action (or inaction)?
